How the United Arab Emirates Emirates ID check works

An Emirates ID number has 15 digits written 784-YYYY-NNNNNNN-C. 784 is the ISO 3166 numeric code for the UAE, YYYY is a year (commonly the birth year), N is a seven-digit serial and C is a Luhn check digit over all 15 digits.

Layout and check
PartMeaning
784Country prefix (ISO 3166 numeric code for the UAE)
YYYYA four-digit year, often the birth year but not guaranteed to be
NNNNNNNSeven-digit serial
CLuhn check digit: double every second digit from the right (starting from the second-to-last), subtract 9 from any result above 9, and the grand total must be divisible by 10

Worked example, 784-1985-1234567-3: from the right, the digits not doubled are 3, 6, 4, 2, 5, 9, 4, 7 (sum 40) and the doubled digits 7, 5, 3, 1, 8, 1, 8 become 5, 1, 6, 2, 7, 2, 7 after subtracting 9 where needed (sum 30). The total 70 is divisible by 10, so the check digit 3 is correct. The number is built for this page and is not a real ID.

What this tool cannot tell you

Only ICP and entities it authorises can confirm that an Emirates ID is valid, current and belongs to a given person. A matching check digit proves none of that. A passing result means the number is well formed. It does not mean it was issued, is current, or belongs to anyone. Official sources to use instead: ICP, Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security.

Where each rule comes from

Not every issuer publishes its check rules. This table says, for each rule used here, who documents it and how firmly.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check an Emirates ID number format?

Enter all 15 digits, with or without dashes. The tool checks the 784 prefix, the length and the Luhn check digit, and warns if the year segment is outside 1900 to today.

Why does an Emirates ID start with 784?

784 is the ISO 3166 numeric code for the United Arab Emirates, so every number begins with it.

Does a passing result prove the Emirates ID is valid?

No. The Luhn digit only catches typing mistakes. Validity, expiry and ownership can only be confirmed through ICP channels.

Is it safe to enter an Emirates ID here?

The check runs in your browser and nothing is sent, stored or logged. Only enter numbers you are entitled to use.

Format check only — not an official verification

This tool checks structure and, where a public algorithm exists, a check digit, entirely in your browser. It does not query any government register, and it cannot confirm that a number was issued or to whom. Nothing you type is transmitted, stored or logged.
