When will I get my first EI payment?
Canada.ca says about 28 days after you apply. This counts it out, shows the weekday and tells you how many days are left from today.
Applied on Monday, October 19, 2026? Add 28 days and the first payment is expected around Monday, November 16, 2026, which is 21 days from October 26, 2026. The week of October 18, 2026 to October 24, 2026 is the unpaid waiting week.

What "about 28 days" means
Canada.ca gives two numbers that people mix up. Its service standard is to give you a decision within 28 days of filing, and it tells claimants they will receive their first payment about 28 days after they apply. This calculator counts 28 calendar days forward from the day you applied and shows the weekday and how far away that day is from today. It is an estimate of when to expect the first payment, not a date Service Canada has promised you.
Worked example: applied on a Monday
| Step | Result |
|---|---|
| Day you applied | Monday, October 19, 2026 |
| Add 28 days | Monday, November 16, 2026 |
| Days from October 26, 2026 | 21 days |
| Unpaid waiting week (last day worked October 16, 2026) | October 18, 2026 to October 24, 2026 |
| First week EI can pay for | week starting October 25, 2026 |
Three things that move the real date
- Reports. Canada.ca says payments are only issued after your reports have been processed, and that you have to submit reports to Service Canada every 2 weeks for as long as you receive benefits. A missed or late report holds payment.
- Records of employment. Service Canada needs your records of employment (ROEs) from each employer to decide your claim. The apply page says you can send required documents after you apply.
- The unpaid week. One week of the claim is never paid, so the first week EI pays for is later than the week you stopped working. Use the EI waiting period calculator to see which week.
What this does not do
It does not check the status of a claim, predict a processing delay or know your bank's deposit time; Canada.ca gave no direct deposit timing on the page we read. For the amount of each payment use the EI benefits calculator.
Method and assumptions
Calendar days are added in UTC so daylight saving time cannot shift the result. The 28-day figure and the report rules are from the Canada.ca "After you apply" page, which showed a page date of 2026-10-19 when read on October 26, 2026.

Frequently asked questions
When do I get my first EI payment?
Canada.ca says you will receive your first payment about 28 days after you apply. Its service standard is to give you a decision within 28 days of filing.
Is the 28 days a guarantee?
No. It is an estimate and a service standard. Payments are only issued after your reports have been processed, so a missing report or missing document can delay it.
Why is the first payment not for the week I stopped working?
One week of a new claim is an unpaid waiting week. Canada.ca says there is 1 week you will not be paid, so the first week EI pays for comes after it.
How often do I have to report?
Canada.ca says you have to submit reports to Service Canada every 2 weeks for as long as you receive benefits, and that you need to submit them to receive payments.
Do I need my record of employment before I apply?
Service Canada needs your records of employment (ROEs) from each employer to decide eligibility, but the apply page says to apply right away and send required documents after you apply.
What if 28 days has passed?
Check that your reports and any requested documents were submitted, then contact Service Canada. This tool cannot see your claim.
Is my date sent to a server?
No. The calculation runs in your browser.
Unofficial estimate
This tool applies the rules in the Employment Insurance Act and on Canada.ca to the dates you enter. Service Canada decides when your benefit period starts and when you are paid, and it can differ if you have severance, vacation pay or other earnings. Nothing you enter leaves your browser. This is not run by Service Canada or ESDC.
