Two related but DIFFERENT credit lines share the same dollar figure. Tell us who you're supporting and we'll point you at the right one.

Both lines cap at $8,601 (2025) per dependant. Line 30425 is an ADD-ON to your spousal or eligible dependant amount; line 30450 is a STANDALONE claim for other infirm dependants 18+, and you can claim it for more than one person.

Line 30425 vs. line 30450 — the real difference

Line 30425 is an ADDITIONAL amount on top of the spousal amount (line 30300) or the eligible dependant amount (line 30400), claimed when that spouse, common-law partner, or eligible dependant has an infirmity. You can only claim it if you're already eligible for the underlying 30300/30400 claim.

Line 30450 is a STANDALONE claim for OTHER infirm dependants age 18 or older who depend on you (or you and someone else) for support — for example an infirm adult child, grandchild, parent, grandparent, sibling, aunt, uncle, niece, or nephew who is your or your spouse's relative and resides in Canada. Unlike 30425, you can claim line 30450 for MORE THAN ONE dependant in the same year, each subject to its own cap.

The dollar amount, and what this tool doesn't model

Both lines cap at $8,601 for 2025. CRA's own line-30450 page confirms the amount is $0 once the dependant's net income reaches $28,798 (2025); its line-30425 page cites the same $28,798 figure as the top of the relevant income range. What neither plain-language CRA page publishes is the exact dollar-for-dollar formula CRA applies to reduce the amount BETWEEN those two points — both pages instead direct you to Schedule 5 ("Amounts for Spouse or Common-Law Partner and Dependants") to calculate your precise reduced claim. This tool reports the two confirmed bounds only; for a dependant with net income between $0 and $28,798, use Schedule 5 or certified tax software for your exact figure.

Frequently asked questions

Can I claim both line 30425 and line 30450 for the same person?

No — they're for different relationships. 30425 tops up the amount for a spouse or an eligible dependant you already claim on 30300/30400; 30450 is for other infirm dependants who don't qualify under 30425.

Can I claim line 30450 for more than one person?

Yes — unlike line 30425, you can claim line 30450 for multiple infirm dependants in the same year, each up to the $8,601 (2025) cap, subject to their own net income.

What counts as "infirm"?

CRA generally requires a physical or mental impairment that isn't required to be as severe as the Disability Tax Credit threshold, but must genuinely limit the person — check CRA's page or the Disability Tax Credit estimator linked above for the related, stricter test.

Where do I find the exact reduced amount if my dependant's income is between $0 and $28,798?

CRA's plain-language line pages don't publish that formula — complete Schedule 5, or use certified tax software, which applies CRA's exact worksheet.

Estimate only — not tax advice

This tool identifies which caregiver line likely applies and shows the two CRA-confirmed dollar bounds for 2025 (the $8,601 maximum and the $28,798 net-income point at which the amount is $0). It does NOT calculate the exact reduced amount for a dependant with net income between those two figures — CRA's own line pages don't publish that formula, and this tool does not invent one. Complete Schedule 5 or confirm with a tax professional for your exact claim.
