Income tax by province

This page covers every province and territory. If you only care about one, the province pages go further — they carry that province’s full bracket table, its own credits and the levies that exist nowhere else, with the source for every figure.

For take-home pay after CPP and EI rather than an annual tax bill, use the paycheque calculator.

Effective vs marginal rate

Effective rate = total tax / total income. This is what you pay on average.

Marginal rate = the rate on the next dollar of income. This is what you save by deducting an extra dollar (e.g. an RRSP contribution).

What this figure is, and what it deliberately leaves out

Canadian income tax is charged on brackets, not on a single rate. Each slice of taxable income is taxed at the rate for that slice, federally and then again provincially. What most people call "my tax rate" is the average (total tax over total income) and it is always lower than the marginal rate that applies to the next dollar earned. The rates, thresholds and constants here are the ones the CRA publishes for the 2026 tax year, including the basic personal amount and its high-income phase-out, Ontario’s two surtax tiers and the 16.5% Quebec abatement.

The mistake people make. Expecting this to match a T4 or a notice of assessment. It cannot: it models the basic personal amount and nothing else. Tuition, medical, donation, spousal and employment credits, and every deduction you do not enter, all move the real figure. Quebec is an estimate on purpose: Revenu Québec administers Quebec’s own income tax, so the CRA publishes no Quebec bracket table to work from.

Disclaimer

Estimates using the 2026 federal and provincial/territorial tax brackets, including the basic personal amount, Ontario’s surtax and the Quebec federal abatement. Not modelled: provincial low-income tax reductions, the Ontario Health Premium, and credits beyond the basic personal amount (age amount, dependents, tuition, and the rest). Your real return will differ.
