1099-K and 1099-NEC thresholds, 2026.
Will a platform or client have to send you a 1099? Pick the form, the year and your numbers.
A platform (PayPal, Venmo, Etsy, eBay, a gig app) files a 1099-K only if your payments exceed $20,000 and exceed 200 transactions. A business client files a 1099-NEC if it paid you $2,000 or more in 2026 (it was $600 through 2025).
No form does not mean no tax. Self-employment and gig income is taxable and reportable whether or not anyone sends you a 1099.

How the check works
Form 1099-K (platforms and payment apps). A third party settlement organization must report only if the gross amount of your payments exceeds $20,000 and the number of transactions exceeds 200. Exactly $20,000 or exactly 200 transactions does not trigger it. This is Internal Revenue Code §6050W(e) as reinstated by Public Law 119-21 sec. 70432, effective as if included in section 9674 of the American Rescue Plan Act.
Form 1099-NEC (contractors). A business that pays you $2,000 or more in a calendar year for services reports it. The old $600 figure applies to payments made through December 31, 2025. Public Law 119-21 sec. 70433 raised it to $2,000 for payments made after that date and indexes it for inflation starting in 2027. This tool applies $2,000 for 2026 only.
Effective dates by tax year
| Year | 1099-K | 1099-NEC |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | $20,000 and over 200 (IRS Notice 2023-10 delayed the $600 rule) | $600 |
| 2023 | $20,000 and over 200 (Notice 2023-74) | $600 |
| 2024 | IRS planned $5,000 (Notice 2024-85); law now restores $20,000 and over 200 | $600 |
| 2025 | IRS planned $2,500 (Notice 2024-85); law now restores $20,000 and over 200 | $600 |
| 2026 | $20,000 and over 200 (the planned $600 never takes effect) | $2,000 |
Because sec. 70432 reaches back, a platform could still have issued a 1099-K for 2024 or 2025 below the restored threshold. Platforms may file voluntarily or under their own rules, so receiving one does not mean this tool is wrong.
What this tool does not decide
It checks the payer’s filing threshold only. It does not model payments to corporations, payments by credit card (reported on 1099-K rather than 1099-NEC), backup withholding, or state thresholds, which can be lower. Check your state revenue agency for state-level rules.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1099-K threshold for 2026?
More than $20,000 in payments and more than 200 transactions on the same platform. Both conditions must be met.
What is the 1099-NEC threshold for 2026?
$2,000 for payments made in 2026, up from $600. It is indexed for inflation after 2026.
Do I owe tax if I did not get a 1099?
Yes. The IRS says that whether or not you receive a Form 1099-K you must report all income on your tax return. The same goes for contractor income with no 1099-NEC.
I got a 1099-K for less than $20,000. Is it wrong?
Not necessarily. For 2024 and 2025 some platforms reported at the lower IRS transition levels before the law restored $20,000, and a platform can file voluntarily. Report the income either way, and if the form includes personal sales you sold at a loss, keep records to show that.
Does the $2,000 NEC threshold apply to payments I made in 2025?
No. It applies to payments made after December 31, 2025. Payments made in 2025 still use $600.
Do states have their own thresholds?
Some do, and they can be lower than the federal ones. This tool checks the federal rule only; confirm with your state revenue agency.
Informational only — not tax advice
This tool applies published federal filing thresholds to the figures you enter. It does not determine your tax owed or whether you are required to report any particular item. Confirm with the IRS or a tax professional.
