How numbers become words
English reads a number in groups of three digits from the right, each followed by a scale word: thousand, million, billion, trillion and so on. Within a group, hundreds come first, then tens and ones, with a hyphen joining tens to ones from 21 to 99 (forty-five). 1,234 is “one thousand two hundred thirty-four”. This converter uses the short scale, where a billion is a thousand million (109) and each name is a factor of 1,000 above the last; the long scale used historically in some countries gives the same word a different value. Names run up to decillion (1033), so the largest number supported is 999 decillion and so on, 36 digits.
American and British style
In British English, Irish English, Australian English and New Zealand English, 999,000 is usually “nine hundred and ninety-nine thousand”, with “and” before the last part under a hundred, while American English drops the “and”: nine hundred ninety-nine thousand. The British style option adds “and” after hundreds and before a final number under 100 (one thousand and one; one hundred and twenty-three). Decimals are read digit by digit after “point”: 3.14 is three point one four.
Ordinal numbers
An ordinal gives position: first, second, third. For numbers made of several words, only the last word changes (twenty-third, five hundred twenty-third). Most numbers add “-th” (sixteenth, hundredth, thousandth); multiples of ten change the final “-y” to “-ieth” (sixtieth); and a few are irregular: first, second, third, fifth, eighth, ninth, twelfth. In figures the suffix is st, nd, rd or th: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, with 11th, 12th and 13th always taking th, so 112th and 1,013th. Ordinals exist only for whole numbers, so a decimal gets the cardinal reading only.
