Worked example
"Two million, three hundred and forty-five thousand six hundred seventy-eight" is read scale by scale: two million = 2,000,000, then 345 thousand = 345,000, then 678. The total is 2,345,678. "Minus seven" gives -7, and "three point one four" gives 3.14.
How it works
The text is lower-cased, hyphens and commas are treated as spaces, and the words are read left to right. Unit and teen words add to the running group, tens words add their value, "hundred" multiplies a single digit word, and a scale word (thousand, million, billion, trillion, quadrillion, quintillion, sextillion) closes the group.
Scale words must run from largest to smallest, so "one thousand million" is rejected rather than guessed. "And" is ignored, which covers the British "one hundred and one". After "point" only single digit words are accepted, read in order.
Scales follow the short scale: a billion is 1,000,000,000. Ordinals such as "twenty-first" are not numbers in this sense and are not accepted; use the ordinal generator for those.

FAQ
How do I convert words to a number?
Type the number in English words, for example "forty-two" or "one thousand two hundred". The tool adds up the groups and shows the digits.
Does it understand "and" and commas?
Yes. "One hundred and one" and "one hundred one" both give 101, and commas are ignored.
Does it use the short scale or the long scale?
The short scale: a million is 1,000,000 and a billion is 1,000,000,000. Words beyond sextillion are not recognised.
Can it read "nineteen hundred"?
No. Colloquial forms like "nineteen hundred" are ambiguous, so the tool asks for the standard form, "one thousand nine hundred".
How do I write decimals?
Say "point" and then each digit: "three point one four" is 3.14.
