How to write a cheque amount
A cheque carries the amount twice: in figures in the box, and in words on the legal-amount line. If they differ, the words generally govern, so write them carefully.
Write the dollars in words, then the cents as a fraction of 100: One thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100. Hyphenate the numbers from 21 to 99, begin with a capital letter and fill the rest of the line with a stroke so no extra words can be added. Whole-dollar amounts are written as and 00/100.

Frequently asked questions
Do I write “dollars” after the words?
Many people print the word dollars at the end of the line or the pre-printed cheque already has it. The fraction line works either way.
What if the words and figures disagree?
Contact your bank before using the cheque. Banks usually follow the words, but an inconsistent cheque can be returned.
Is a cheque the same as a check?
They are the same instrument. Cheque is the Canadian, British and Australian spelling.
