RRIF minimum withdrawal calculator.

Once you convert an RRSP to a RRIF, CRA forces you to withdraw at least a minimum amount every year — and the percentage climbs every year you age. See your real dollar minimum.

Your RRIF's minimum withdrawal is your balance at the start of the year × a prescribed factor that depends on your age (or your spouse's, if you elected that). Under age 71, the factor is 1 ÷ (90 − your age). From 71 to 94, it's a fixed published percentage that rises every year. At 95 and older, it's capped at 20%. There is no minimum in the calendar year you open the RRIF — it starts the year after.

Your carrier's statement value on January 1 — not today's value, and not what you contributed.
Optional elections
A one-time election made when the RRIF is set up — usually chosen when the spouse is younger, since a younger age means a smaller mandatory withdrawal. It cannot be changed afterward.
No minimum withdrawal is required in the year the RRIF is established — the requirement starts the following year.

Under age 71, the factor isn't a published table entry — it's the formula 1 ÷ (90 − age). For example, at 65 that's 1÷25 = 4.00%; at 70 it's 1÷20 = 5.00%.

Which schedule applies to your RRIF

This tool uses the schedule in subsection 7308(4) of the Income Tax Regulations, which applies to any RRIF established after 1992 — effectively every RRIF opened in the last three decades. A small, shrinking population of RRIFs established before 1993 ("qualifying" RRIFs) use a slightly lower schedule under subsection 7308(3). If your RRIF has been running continuously since before 1993, confirm your factor with your carrier rather than relying on this table.

A Life Income Fund (LIF) minimum uses this exact schedule

If you hold a LIF instead of (or alongside) a RRIF, its minimum withdrawal is defined, in every Canadian jurisdiction's pension legislation, by reference to this same RRIF minimum-amount formula — so this calculator applies equally to a LIF minimum. A LIF's maximum withdrawal is a different question entirely: it's set by provincial (or federal) pension legislation rather than the Income Tax Act, several jurisdictions tie it to an annually published bond-yield reference rate rather than a fixed table, and we were not able to verify a complete, current table across provinces for this build — so no multi-province LIF maximum is offered here. For Ontario, see the LIF maximum withdrawal calculator; elsewhere check your LIF statement or provincial pension regulator.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to withdraw the minimum in the year I open my RRIF?

No. The Income Tax Act does not require a minimum payment in the calendar year the RRIF is established — the requirement starts the year after.

Is tax withheld on the minimum amount?

No withholding tax applies to the minimum amount itself. Withholding tax only applies to any amount you withdraw ABOVE the minimum in a year.

Can I withdraw more than the minimum?

Yes, any time and any amount — there's no maximum on a RRIF (unlike a LIF, which caps the maximum you can take out each year).

Can I change the spousal-age election later?

No. Once you elect to base the minimum on your spouse's or common-law partner's age, that election is permanent for the life of the RRIF.

Estimate only

This tool applies the published Income Tax Regulations 7308(4) prescribed-factor schedule to a balance and age you provide. It does not account for withholding tax on amounts above the minimum, does not calculate a LIF maximum, and does not model the (rarer) pre-1993 "qualifying RRIF" schedule. Confirm your exact figures with your RRIF carrier.
