OAS deferral calculator.
You can start Old Age Security at 65 or delay it as late as 70. Every month you wait adds 0.6% — see exactly what that's worth in dollars.
Delaying OAS past 65 increases your monthly payment by 0.6% for every month you wait (7.2% per year), up to a maximum of 36% at age 70. There is no benefit to waiting past 70 — the maximum is reached there. There is also no benefit to delaying if you're eligible for the Guaranteed Income Supplement, since GIS amounts never increase to compensate.

What deferral does not do
Delaying OAS also delays anything that depends on already receiving it: you cannot get the Guaranteed Income Supplement, and your spouse or common-law partner cannot apply for the Allowance, until your OAS actually starts. GIS and Allowance amounts do not increase to compensate for a delayed OAS start — so deferral rarely makes sense for a lower-income senior who would otherwise qualify for GIS. It can make sense if you're still working, have other income, and expect to live well past your early 80s (the rough break-even point against simply starting at 65).

Frequently asked questions
Can I defer OAS past age 70?
No. Age 70 is the maximum — the increase stops accruing once you turn 70, so there's no reason to wait any longer to apply.
Can I apply for OAS retroactively after deferring?
Yes, up to 11 months, but you will not receive the monthly deferral increase for the retroactive period — only for the months you genuinely waited before applying.
Does deferring OAS affect my CPP?
No. CPP and OAS are separate programs with separate rules — you can start CPP as early as 60, independent of your OAS deferral decision.
Does the OAS recovery tax (clawback) change if I defer?
The threshold itself doesn't change, but since your monthly payment is higher after deferring, a higher-income senior deferring OAS could end up with more of it clawed back. This tool doesn't model the recovery tax — use the CPP & OAS calculator above for that.

This tool applies the published 0.6%/month deferral rate to a base amount you provide. It does not model the OAS recovery tax (clawback), partial-residency pensions beyond the base amount you enter, or the effect of deferral on GIS/Allowance eligibility.
