Grooming Calculators
Hair shedding tracker.
Count the hairs you find in the brush, shower drain or pillow at the same time each day, then enter the numbers here. You get the average, median, how many days went over the usual 50 to 100 range and how the last week compares with the first. A describing tool, not a diagnosis. Runs in your browser; nothing is sent or stored.
Worked example
You count 60, 80, 100 and 120 hairs on four days. Mean = 360 / 4 = 90; median = (80 + 100) / 2 = 90; one day (120) is over 100. With 14 days or more, the tool also averages the first seven days and the last seven and shows the change: first week 100 a day and last week 50 a day is a 50% drop.
How it works
mean = total hairs / days; median is the middle value of the sorted counts; days over the threshold are the days with more than the threshold. Week-on-week change = (last 7-day mean - first 7-day mean) / first 7-day mean x 100, shown when you enter at least 14 days.
The threshold is a reference, not a verdict. Counts depend on hair length, how you wash and brush, and how carefully you collect hairs, so a single day means very little. Look at the trend over several weeks measured the same way.
This tool describes the numbers you enter. It does not identify a type or cause of hair loss and has nothing to say about a Norwood or Ludwig stage. Shedding that stays high for weeks, patchy loss, a receding line, itching, pain or scalp changes are reasons to see a doctor or dermatologist.
Sources and basis (checked 2026-10-05): the 50 to 100 hairs a day figure is from the American Academy of Dermatology Association public guidance on hair loss; the averages are arithmetic on your own counts.
FAQ
How many hairs is normal to shed per day?
The American Academy of Dermatology says it is normal to shed about 50 to 100 hairs a day. Your own count varies with hair length, washing and brushing.
How do I count shed hairs?
Pick one routine, such as hairs in the brush plus the shower drain plus the pillow, and count the same way each day. Do not compare days counted differently.
Is a higher count one day a problem?
Not by itself. Washing days collect several days of shed hair, so counts jump. Look at the average over a week or more.
What does the week-on-week change mean?
It compares your last 7 days with your first 7. A negative number means fewer hairs lately. It is a rough signal, not a medical measure.
Does this tell me if I am losing my hair?
No. Hair loss is diagnosed from the pattern, scalp and history, by a clinician. This tool only summarises counts.
