Worked example
Shampoo and conditioner $18 every 2 months = $9 a month. Deodorant $8 every 2 months = $4. Razor blades $20 every 3 months = $6.67. A $35 haircut every month = $35. Cologne $90 every 6 months = $15. Skincare $45 every 2 months = $22.50. Total $92.17 a month, $1,106 a year. On $3,000 take-home that is 3.1%.
How it works
per month = price / months between purchases; per year = per month x 12; per week = per year / 52.18. Share of income = monthly cost / monthly take-home income.
For items you buy often, use a fraction of a month (0.5 for twice a month). For items you use up slowly, use how long a unit really lasts, not how often you remember to buy it. The skincare cost per use calculator gives that figure from size and daily use.
No spending benchmarks are built in. Averages differ by country, age and gender and are rarely sourced well, so the tool shows your own numbers and lets you decide what is worth it.
Sources and basis (checked 2026-10-05): arithmetic on the numbers you enter. No prices or national averages are assumed.
FAQ
How much should I spend on personal care a month?
There is no sourced standard, so this tool does not give one. Add your items, see your own total and share of income, and decide.
What counts as personal care?
Whatever you choose to list: shampoo, deodorant, razors, haircuts, skincare, cologne, toothpaste, nails, hair removal. Add a row for each.
How do I enter something I buy twice a month?
Use 0.5 for months between purchases. Once a year is 12; every week is about 0.23.
How do I enter a haircut?
Price including tip, and months between cuts, for example 1 for monthly or 1.5 for every six weeks.
Does it include services like waxing or nails?
Yes, if you add them with their price and how often you go.
