Beard oil dilution.

Pick your bottle size and how strong the scent should be. The tool tells you how many drops of essential oil and how many ml of carrier oil to use, and warns you when the blend is stronger than the 1.2% ceiling recommended for facial skin. Runs in your browser; nothing is sent or stored.

Bottle and strength

%
Start low. Facial products are usually kept between 0.5% and 1.2%.
20 is the common convention. Drop size varies by oil and dropper, so for accuracy weigh the oil on a 0.01 g scale instead.

Worked example

A 30 ml bottle at 1% needs 30 x 0.01 = 0.3 ml of essential oil, which is 0.3 x 20 = 6 drops. The other 29.7 ml is carrier oil such as jojoba or fractionated coconut. At 0.5% the same bottle takes 3 drops.

How it works

essential oil ml = bottle ml x dilution % / 100; carrier ml is the rest. Drops = essential oil ml x drops per ml. A fluid ounce is converted at 29.5735 ml.

Drop counts are approximate and are rounded to whole drops; the tool also tells you the real percentage that the rounded drop count gives. Oils with thick or thin flow drop at different sizes, so a scale is the accurate method.

The 1.2% facial ceiling is the top of the facial range in the Tisserand Institute dilution guidance. The tool still calculates above it, up to 5%, but flags the result because a beard oil sits against facial skin. Individual oils have their own limits that can be lower: phototoxic citrus oils such as bergamot, lemon, lime and grapefruit (cold pressed) and cinnamon bark are the common examples.

Sources and basis (checked 2026-10-05): facial dilution range of 0.5 to 1.2% from the Tisserand Institute, Dilution for essential oils (2024), with Robert Tisserand and Rodney Young, Essential Oil Safety, 2nd edition (Churchill Livingstone, 2014) as a secondary reference; the 20 drops per ml convention as used by the Tisserand Institute; oil-specific limits in the IFRA Standards Library.

FAQ

How many drops of essential oil go in 30 ml of beard oil?

At 0.5%, 3 drops; at 1%, 6 drops; at 1.2%, about 7 drops (using 20 drops per ml). Start with the lowest and add only if you want it stronger.

What percentage of essential oil is safe for a beard?

Facial products are usually kept between 0.5% and 1.2%. Some oils have lower limits, so check the oil you use. Patch test first.

Why is my beard oil stronger than the percentage I calculated?

Drops vary in size. A thin oil from a fast dropper can be 30 or more drops per ml. Enter your own drops per ml, or weigh the oil.

What carrier oil should I use?

This tool only does the arithmetic. Jojoba and fractionated coconut are common choices; pick one you are not allergic to.

Can I leave out the essential oil?

Yes. Plain carrier oil is a valid beard oil. Essential oil adds scent and is the only part that carries a skin-safety limit.

Disclaimer

Not medical or safety advice. Dilution figures are general guidelines for most essential oils; individual oils have their own, lower limits (for example phototoxic citrus oils and cinnamon bark). Patch test, keep away from eyes, avoid during pregnancy or on children without professional advice, and check the IFRA Standards Library for the oil you use.
