Formula, source, and limits

Method reviewed September 30, 2026: layout stations use ceil(wall length ÷ spacing) + 1. Estimated stations inside openings are removed, then your king, jack, cripple, and corner assumptions are added. Plates and sheathing are rounded up after the allowance.

Trade source: APA Advanced Framing Construction Guide, Form M400, revised April 2016, provides framing terminology and opening/layout context. This calculator does not reproduce or infer structural details from the guide.

Boundary: This is a material-planning estimate, not a code check, drawing, or engineering service. Header sizes, loads, bracing, connections, species/grade, opening positions, fire blocking, and fastening remain project decisions.

Frequently asked questions

Does this size wall headers?

No. It counts the king and jack studs you enter, but it never selects header dimensions or a structural assembly.

How are openings handled?

Estimated layout studs inside the entered opening widths are removed. The calculator then adds adjustable opening members and spacing-based cripples, so every assumption remains visible.

Is this a code or engineering check?

No. Carry the takeoff into project-approved plans, supplier quotes, and local review rather than treating it as approval.
