Worked example

A 1,000 gal tank serving 4 people: the table lists 2.6 years between pump-outs. Serving 2 people it lists 5.9 years. A 1,125 gal tank for 4 people is halfway between the 1,000 gal row (2.6 years) and the 1,250 gal row (3.4 years), so about 3.0 years.

Formulas, sources, and limits

Formulas: Values come straight from Table 1 of Oregon State EC 1343 for year-round residences. The authors calculated them to give at least 24 hours of wastewater retention, assuming 50% digestion of retained solids. This tool linearly interpolates between listed tank sizes and returns a table value as listed when the size matches. Tanks above 2,000 gal are not offered because the 2,500 gal row of the published table has values for 5 to 8 people that do not follow the pattern of the other rows.

Sources (retrieved 2026-10): Oregon State University Extension EC 1343, Septic tank maintenance (revised March 2022, reviewed 2025).

Limits: The publication warns that tanks require more frequent pumping with a garbage disposal. Table values are for year-round residences. Seasonal use, water softener discharge, and local rules differ; some jurisdictions mandate a fixed pump-out interval. The only reliable check is a sludge and scum measurement by a septic service provider.

Frequently asked questions

How often should a septic tank be pumped?

Oregon State’s table gives about 2.6 years for a 1,000 gal tank with four people and 5.9 years with two. The same publication says systems are commonly pumped every one to five years.

Does a garbage disposal change the pumping interval?

Yes. The source states tanks require more frequent pumping if residents use a garbage disposal.

What if my tank is 750 gallons?

The table has a 750 gal row. It lists 4.2 years for two people and 1.8 years for four.

Is this a replacement for an inspection?

No. Measuring sludge and scum is the better test; the table is a planning estimate.
