Roofing calculator FAQ
What does this roofing calculator estimate?
It estimates pitched roof area, roofing squares, shingle bundles and underlayment rolls. If you enter local per-square and fixed project rates, it also totals those user-supplied costs.
How does the calculator work out roofing squares?
It multiplies roof length by width, applies the selected roof-pitch multiplier and waste percentage, then divides the resulting area by 100.
How are underlayment and ridge cap calculated?
Underlayment rolls use the roll coverage you enter. Ridge cap is not inferred from roof shape; enter the measured ridge and hip length if you want it included.
Can I use the result as a final roofing order?
Use it as a planning estimate. Roof shape, valleys, overhangs, openings, local labour, disposal and product-specific coverage can change the final order and price, so confirm quantities and rates before committing.
Coverage assumptions
The bundle estimate uses three bundles per roofing square. GAF Timberline HDZ specifications, checked October 3, 2026, list three bundles per square, but specialty shingles can differ. Confirm the package and underlayment coverage before ordering. Cost fields start at zero: enter current local material, labour, tear-off, disposal and permit rates rather than relying on a hidden regional price assumption.
