How the break-even works

Walmart Connect sells Sponsored Search placements on a cost-per-click basis: you pay only when a shopper clicks your ad, and Walmart defines ROAS as total attributed sales revenue divided by ad spend. An ad is only worth running if the ad cost of winning one order is smaller than the profit that order makes before ads. This calculator computes that profit from your price, your Walmart referral fee, other percentage fees, product cost and shipping or fulfilment cost.

From the profit before ads it derives the break-even ACOS (profit before ads divided by order value), the break-even ROAS (its inverse), and the maximum CPC (conversion rate times profit before ads). Add your real CPC and conversion rate and it also shows the ad cost per order and the profit after ads.

Why the referral fee is not pre-filled

Walmart's referral fee differs by category and the author could not retrieve a rate schedule from Walmart's own pages on the date this tool was checked, and third-party guides disagree. Rather than present a guess as a fact, the field is required. Read your percentage from your Seller Center fee schedule and the rest of the maths follows. The checkbox lets you say whether that percentage applies to shipping you charge as well.

Worked example

Price $30, referral fee 15% ($4.50), item cost $10, shipping cost $5: profit before ads $10.50. Break-even ACOS is 35% and break-even ROAS 2.86x. At a $0.50 CPC and 4% conversion, one order costs $12.50 of clicks, so each ad-driven order loses $2.00. The maximum CPC that breaks even is $0.42.

FAQ

How do I calculate break-even ACOS on Walmart?

Divide your profit per order before ads by the order value. If you earn $10.50 on a $30 order, break-even ACOS is 35%; spend above that per order loses money.

What is break-even ROAS for Walmart Sponsored Products?

It is order value divided by profit before ads, the inverse of break-even ACOS. Walmart defines ROAS as attributed sales revenue divided by ad spend.

How does Walmart charge for Sponsored Products?

Walmart's Marketplace Learn guide says placements are sold on a cost-per-click basis, so you pay when a shopper clicks your ad.

Why do I have to enter my own referral fee?

Referral fees vary by category and published third-party tables conflict, so this tool does not assume a rate. Use the percentage from your Seller Center fee schedule.

What conversion rate should I use?

Use your own: orders divided by ad clicks from your Walmart Connect report for the item. If you lack data, try several values to see how sensitive the maximum CPC is.

Is a high ROAS always profitable?

No. A 5x ROAS loses money if your break-even ROAS is 6x. Compare your ROAS with the break-even figure, not with a generic benchmark.
