Worked example
A $3.00 tip at 8.4% + $0.30: 8.4% of $3.00 is $0.25, plus $0.30 is $0.55. That is 18.4% of the tip. At $1.00 the same fees take 38.4%; at $25.00 only 9.6%. To keep fees at or under 10%, a payment has to be at least $18.75: $0.30 / (0.10 - 0.084).
How it works
Part of most payment fees is a fixed amount, so the share taken rises as the payment shrinks. The fee share at amount A is the percentage plus the fixed fee divided by A. The smallest payment that stays under a limit L is the fixed fee divided by (L - percentage), which only exists if L is higher than the percentage alone.
The starting values add up the combination in Buy Me a Coffee's help article: 5% platform + 2.9% Stripe + 0.5% payout, and $0.30 Stripe fixed. Other platforms differ, and Stripe's own pricing pages show their card rates; type your own.

FAQ
How much of a $5 tip goes to fees?
With 8.4% + $0.30 it is $0.72, or 14.4%, so you keep $4.28. The fixed $0.30 alone is 6% of $5.00.
Why do small donations cost more in percentage terms?
A fixed fee per payment does not shrink with the amount, so it takes a bigger bite of a small payment.
What is the minimum payment for a fee limit?
The fixed fee divided by your limit minus the percentage fee. With a 10% limit and the starting fees it is $18.75.
Can fees be passed to the supporter?
Some platforms offer that. This tool shows fees as taken from the payment; adjust the amount you enter if supporters cover them.
