Which days to count

Time to fill is usually counted from the day the requisition is approved or the job is posted to the day an offer is accepted. Time to hire is a different measure that starts when a particular candidate applies. Use one start and end point for every role, and say which you chose when you share the number.

Why median as well as average

One role that took 60 days pulls the average up. The median is the middle role when sorted, so it shows the typical case. If the two differ a lot, a few hard-to-fill roles are driving the average.

The vacancy cost per day is your own figure, for example lost output or overtime cover. Multiply it by the days to price the delay. For the spend on filling, see the cost per hire calculator.

FAQ

How do you calculate time to fill?

Count the days from job opening or approval to accepted offer for each role, add them up and divide by the number of roles.

What is the difference between time to fill and time to hire?

Time to fill starts when the position opens. Time to hire starts when a specific candidate enters the process. Both end at the accepted offer.

What is a good time to fill?

It varies by role and market, so no benchmark is built in. Set your own target in the page and track the share of roles that meet it.

What numbers can I enter?

Whole or decimal days, separated by commas, spaces or semicolons. Anything else shows an error.
