Side hustles

Side hustle flipping vs promoting: hourly compared.

Put both hustles on the same scale: net per week, hours per week and the hourly figure after a tax set-aside. Both sides are your own estimates.

Hourly = (weekly revenue − weekly costs) ÷ every hour the hustle takes. On the example inputs, flipping nets $97.00 over 10 hours ($9.70 an hour) and promoting nets $195.00 over 8 hours ($24.38 an hour). They are placeholders, not typical results, and results vary.

How the comparison works

Flipping weekly net = items sold × net profit per item − weekly fixed costs; hours include sourcing, listing and shipping. Promoting weekly net = events × (payout − your costs); hours include outreach, travel and the night itself. Per-hour figures divide by all hours, and the after-set-aside column applies your chosen percentage to positive profit. The last column shows the net per item or per event you would need to reach the hourly figure you compare against, holding hours constant.

Worked example

Eight items a week at $14.00 net with $15.00 of weekly costs nets $97.00 for ten hours. One event a week paying $220 with $25 of costs nets $195.00 for eight hours. That is $9.70 versus $24.38 an hour before set-aside and $7.28 versus $18.28 after a 25% set-aside. Change the hours honestly and the leader can change.

What the two hustles share, and where they differ

Both are self-employed income with no guaranteed hours. Flipping has inventory risk and a time cost you control; promoting depends on turnout and the organizer’s reporting, and income can be lumpy. Neither number is a forecast. Get your flip net per item from the flip profit calculator and your promoter payout from the commission calculator. For more ways to compare, see the other business calculators; a ranked hustle comparison is not part of this page.

Methodology

All inputs are weekly averages you estimate. Variation between weeks is not modelled, so test a good week and a bad week separately and compare. Time you enjoy and time you resent are priced the same here; whether the hourly figure is enough is your judgment.

FAQ

Which pays more, flipping or promoting?

There is no general answer. Enter your own weekly figures; the calculator shows which comes out higher on them.

What hours should I count?

Every hour: sourcing, listing and shipping for flipping; outreach, travel and the event itself for promoting.

How do I include taxes?

Enter a set-aside percentage. It is a planning figure, not your tax rate; see the IRS page cited and a professional.

Why is the hourly figure lower than I expected?

Unpaid hours (sourcing, messages, travel, outreach) are usually the cause. Counting them is the point of this page.

Is this a forecast of my earnings?

No. It is arithmetic on your estimates, and results vary.

Estimate only

This page is arithmetic on the numbers you enter. It does not predict what you will earn, and results vary widely with sourcing, pricing, demand, the actual agreement and luck. It is not a promise of income and not tax, legal or financial advice. Fee defaults were read from each platform’s own pages in October 2026 and change.
