How UPC-A becomes EAN-13
A GTIN-12 is a GTIN-13 with a leading zero. GS1 states that the zeros used to pad shorter GTINs are filler and that “the presence or lack of these leading zeroes does not change the GTIN data element value”. So 036000291452 (UPC-A) and 0036000291452 (EAN-13) are the same product number written at two lengths.
The check digit is not recalculated: the GS1 mod-10 weights count from the right, so a leading zero adds nothing to the sum. This tool still verifies the UPC-A check digit first, so a mistyped number is flagged instead of being converted.
What it does not do
It does not check that the number was issued to anyone, and it does not look anything up. An 8-digit UPC-E must be expanded to 12 digits before you use this. Going the other way only works when the EAN-13 starts with 0: see the EAN-13 to UPC-A converter.

Frequently asked questions
Is a UPC the same as an EAN?
A UPC-A is the 12-digit form (GTIN-12) and an EAN-13 is the 13-digit form (GTIN-13). Every UPC-A has an EAN-13 equivalent made by adding a leading zero. The reverse is not true.
Does the check digit change when I add the zero?
No. The GS1 mod-10 calculation weights digits from the right, so a leading zero contributes nothing and the check digit stays the same.
Why would I need to convert?
Some systems store every barcode as 13 digits, or reject 12-digit input. Padding a UPC-A to 13 digits keeps the same product number.
Can I convert a UPC-E?
Not directly. A UPC-E is a compressed 8-digit form and must be expanded to the 12-digit UPC-A first.
