How a GTIN-14 is built

GS1 builds a GTIN-14 for a fixed-measure grouping by taking the GTIN of the contained item without its check digit, putting an indicator digit in front, and calculating a new check digit. The specification’s own example takes 061414112345 and produces a different check digit for each indicator (single item 2, indicator 1 gives 9, indicator 8 gives 8). The 12 digits come from the GTIN-13 form, so a UPC-A gets a leading zero first.

Worked example: UPC-A 036000291452 becomes the GTIN-13 body 003600029145; with indicator 1 the 13-digit body is 1003600029145, the check digit is 9, and the GTIN-14 is 10036000291459.

Rules worth knowing

Indicators 1 to 8 are for fixed-measure groupings. GS1 says that when those eight are used up, further groupings are identified with a GTIN-13 or GTIN-12 instead. Indicator 9 is reserved for variable-measure trade items and is not offered here. The GTIN-14 is usually printed as an ITF-14 or GS1-128 barcode on the outer carton.

Frequently asked questions

What does the indicator digit mean?

It tells apart packaging levels of the same product, such as a 6-pack and a 24-case. GS1 lets you assign indicators 1 to 8 to different groupings; the meaning of each is your own.

Why does the check digit change?

The check digit covers all the digits before it. Adding an indicator digit changes the digits, so GS1 requires a new check digit for the GTIN-14.

Is a GTIN-14 required for cartons?

Not always. You can instead give the case its own GTIN-13 or GTIN-12 from your own prefix. A GTIN-14 derived from the unit GTIN is one of the options GS1 describes.

Can I use indicator 9 or 0?

No. 9 is reserved for variable-measure items, and the specification lists only 1 to 8 for groupings of identical items.
