Worked example

12,000 business miles in 2025 × 70 cents = $8,400. In 2026 the rate changed mid-year: 6,000 miles before July 1 at 72.5 cents ($4,350) plus 6,000 after at 76 cents ($4,560) is $8,910. Use each trip’s own date, not the date you file.

Plain-language explainer

The standard mileage rate lets you deduct a flat amount per mile instead of tracking actual vehicle costs such as gas, insurance and repairs. The IRS has changed it mid-year in 2011, 2022 and 2026, so a year can have two rates.

The medical and military-moving rate is a single column: the IRS table does not separate them. The IRS table flags 2018 as the start of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act rules, under which moving mileage applies only to eligible military members. The charity rate is set by law at 14 cents, which is why it never moves.

The IRS page lists periods from 2011 on, so earlier years are not shown. Our IRS mileage deduction calculator handles the 2026 split year with extra detail.

Frequently asked questions

What is the IRS mileage rate for 2026?

For 2026, business use is 72.5 cents per mile January 1 through June 30 and 76 cents July 1 through December 31. Medical or military moving is 20.5 then 23.5 cents; charity is 14 cents all year.

What was the IRS mileage rate in 2025?

70 cents per mile for business, 21 cents for medical or moving, and 14 cents for charity.

Can the IRS change the mileage rate mid-year?

Yes. It did so in 2011, 2022 and again in 2026, as the table shows.

Do I use the rate for the year I file or the year I drove?

The year (or period) you drove. Mileage driven before July 1, 2026 uses the earlier 2026 rate.

Why is the charity rate always 14 cents?

It is set by statute rather than by the IRS annual cost study, so it only changes if Congress changes it.
