Check a doctor’s licence with DocInfo.
DocInfo, run by the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB), offers physician information drawn from state medical boards. This guide explains how to use it and when to go to the state board directly.
Important, up front: this is a guide, not a verification service. It links to the official register and never queries it for you. The live record on the official site is the only thing that confirms a licence or registration.
How to check, step by step
- Get the doctor’s full name and the state where they practise.
- Open DocInfo (docinfo.org), the FSMB’s physician information site.
- Search for the physician and review the profile shown.
- Confirm licence status and any board actions with the state medical board in the state where they practise.
- For a federal provider identifier only, use the NPI lookup, which is not a licence check.
DocInfo is a convenience index; the licensing record is held by each state medical board. Check the DocInfo site for its current coverage and any fees.
An NPI is a federal identifier from CMS and does not prove a licence.

Frequently asked questions
Who runs DocInfo?
The Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB).
Is DocInfo the official licence record?
The licence itself is issued and recorded by the state medical board, so confirm with that board for anything important.
Does an NPI prove someone is licensed?
No. An NPI identifies a provider in a federal directory; it is not a state licence.
Does this page check the doctor for me?
No. It only links to DocInfo and the FSMB and never sees what you type. This page gives no medical advice.
Guide only — not an official verification
