California DCA license search and the BBC record.

The Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) hosts one License Search for most of its boards. This guide uses the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology (BBC) as the worked case, and lists the DCA bodies the search leaves out.

Short answer: search.dca.ca.gov shows whether a licence is current, expired, or subject to disciplinary action, but it does not cover every DCA body. Contractors, real estate appraisers and court reporters, among others, are verified on their own sites. This page does not look anyone up.

What the DCA License Search asks for

The DCA search page offers dropdown menus listing DCA boards, bureaus and licence types, text fields for Business Name, First Name and Last Name, and a Registry Number field. An Advanced Search link leads to a separate search page. The page says each record shows whether a licence is “current, expired, or has been subject to disciplinary action”, such as suspension or revocation.

That is as far as DCA’s page goes on status words. It does not define current or expired, and it does not publish a longer status list. The Board of Barbering and Cosmetology’s renewal page adds the word Delinquent for a licence holder who has not met renewal requirements.

Who is not on the DCA search

This is the single most useful fact on the page. DCA states that some of its entities are not on the system and must be verified on their own websites. The list on the search page names seven: the Bureau of Household Goods and Services (household movers), the Bureau of Private Postsecondary Education, the Bureau of Real Estate Appraisers, the Contractors State License Board, the License Portability and State Registration List for Servicemembers and their Spouses, licensees exempt from Electronic Data Transmission, and the Court Reporters Board.

So if you search for a contractor on search.dca.ca.gov and find nothing, the search has not told you the person is unlicensed. The Contractors State License Board runs its own check. Our California contractor page covers it.

The BBC renewal cycle and the Delinquent status

According to the board’s renewal page, licences renew every 2 years, and renewals can be submitted up to 83 days before expiration. A licence holder who has not met the renewal requirements is shown as Delinquent. The board adds that it cancels licences that are not renewed for 5 years, and that after cancellation a person must pass the examination to be licensed again, using the cancelled licence number as their qualification on the examination application. Outstanding fines must be paid before a renewal is issued.

The page does not give a separate definition for “expired” or a distinct late-renewal window, so this guide does not either. The statuses and rules the board’s page names are Delinquent for unmet renewal requirements and cancellation after 5 years without renewal.

Worked example (hypothetical dates)

Take a hypothetical cosmetologist whose licence expires on June 30, 2026. The window to renew opens 83 days earlier, around April 8, 2026. If no renewal is filed by June 30, the licence is Delinquent, and a client searching in September 2026 may find a record that is not shown as current. If nothing is filed, the five-year cancellation point arrives around June 30, 2031. After that, the person would have to sit the examination again. The dates here are made up to show the arithmetic, so confirm the rule on the board’s renewal page and call the board on (800) 952-5210 for any real case.

Searching by name versus by number

Choose the board or bureau and licence type from the dropdowns, then either enter a name or a registry number. Names are risky for common surnames, and the page itself distinguishes First Name, Last Name and Business Name fields, so put a salon in the business field. Numbers are exact, so use one when a shop displays it. The BBC’s own page says you can search by name or licence number on the License Search page, and that outstanding fines appear in the licence’s BreEZe account.

DCA does not publish a format rule for the number on the pages checked. Numbers differ between boards, so do not assume the same pattern carries across professions.

Common mistakes

Checking only the person: BBC licences cover establishments and mobile units as well as individuals, and the renewal page lists separate rates for each, so a stylist and the salon are different records. Reading “Delinquent” as “revoked”: delinquent is about renewal, while suspension and revocation are disciplinary actions. Assuming the DCA search is a complete California licence register: it is not, per the exclusion list above.

Who this is for

Clients of salons, barbershops, estheticians and nail studios; salon owners checking booth renters; and licensees who want to see what the public sees. The DCA search itself serves many more professions, so the first half of this guide applies beyond barbering.

What this does not cover

No fee advice beyond the board’s page, no discipline history, no continuing-education rules, and no data from the DCA register. The page links to the official tools and explains how they behave. Nothing typed here is sent anywhere.

Guide only — not a verification tool

This page describes official registers and links to them. It does not check anyone’s licence status, does not copy or proxy any register, and nothing you might type here is transmitted anywhere. Registers change and licensing rules differ by state and city; use the official source linked above and contact the regulator to confirm anything that matters.
