What to know before you search

Regulated name, not trading name

For a firm, search the regulated name rather than a trading name, or enter its SRA ID number.

The record check is separate

Check a solicitor’s record lists published decisions such as fines and conditions on practice. Not all decisions are published and they generally stay online for three years.

Suspect a fake?

The SRA has a page on bogus and fake solicitors. If the details you were given do not match the register, contact the SRA.

What is an SRA ID number?

The SRA also calls it the roll number. You can search decisions by it, and firms can be searched by their SRA ID.

What if the Solicitors Register shows no result?

The SRA says no results means it has no record of a matching firm or person, so it is not safe to assume they are regulated.

Does the register cover barristers?

The SRA register covers SRA-regulated individuals and firms in England and Wales. The SRA page does not mention barristers, so this page does not cover them.

How long do SRA decisions stay online?

Generally three years, and not all decisions are published.
