Online versus counter
“Online” is Royal Mail’s Click & Drop price, used when you buy postage through Royal Mail’s online channels. “Counter” is the recommended retail price in the Our Prices guide. The online guide adds a charge of 50p per item when Royal Mail collects it from you.
VAT and compensation
Per the guides’ footnotes, Tracked prices include VAT at 20% while 1st Class, 2nd Class, Signed For and Special Delivery 1pm prices are exempt from VAT. Standard 1st and 2nd Class and Signed For include compensation up to £20, Tracked up to £75. The calculator shows the Special Delivery Guaranteed by 1pm price for the £750 compensation tier only; higher cover and 9am delivery cost more.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to send a parcel with Royal Mail?
It depends on the format, weight and service. From 5 October 2026 a Small Parcel up to 2 kg is £4.40 by 2nd Class and £5.70 by 1st Class bought online, or £4.60 and £5.90 at the counter. A Medium Parcel up to 2 kg is £7.00 by 2nd Class online.
Is Royal Mail cheaper online?
In the October 2026 guides the online price is the same or lower for each service this tool shows. For example Tracked 48 for a Small Parcel is £3.75 online and £4.70 at the counter.
Does Royal Mail charge by size or weight?
Both. The size sets the format (Large Letter, Small Parcel, Medium Parcel) and the weight sets the band inside that format.
What is the difference between 1st Class and Tracked 24?
Both aim for next-day delivery. Standard 1st Class includes compensation up to £20, while Tracked 24 includes online tracking and compensation up to £75, at a higher counter price.
Can I send a parcel over 20 kg?
Not with Royal Mail UK services. Parcelforce Worldwide takes parcels up to 30 kg within its size limits.
