What this random letter generator does

It picks letters from the English alphabet with every letter in the chosen pool equally likely. By default that is all 26 letters from A to Z, so each letter has a 1 in 26 chance (about 3.85%) on every draw. Choose Vowels only for A, E, I, O and U (1 in 5 each), or Consonants only for the other 21 letters (1 in 21 each). In this tool Y counts as a consonant. Real English sometimes uses Y as a vowel, but a fixed rule keeps the pool predictable.

Worked example. Ten letters, all 26, No repeats on: ten different letters such as Q, B, M, T, E, K, A, X, R, L, in random order. Turn No repeats off and the same letter can appear more than once, which is how real letter draws behave. With No repeats on you can ask for at most 26 letters (5 vowels or 21 consonants for those pools).

Common uses

Where the randomness comes from

The tool uses the browser’s secure random generator, crypto.getRandomValues(), and maps it onto the letter pool by rejection sampling, which avoids favouring any letter. The tool is intentionally letter-frequency-neutral: it does not follow how often letters appear in English text, so Z is as likely as E. If you want letters weighted like real words, this is not that tool.

Frequently asked questions

How do I generate a random letter?

Press Generate. The default is one uppercase letter from A to Z. Change "How many" to draw several letters at once.

Is each letter equally likely?

Yes. Every letter in the chosen pool has the same chance, so with all 26 letters each has a 1 in 26 chance. The tool does not weight letters by how common they are in English.

Can I get only vowels or only consonants?

Yes. Use the Letters to use menu. Vowels are A, E, I, O and U. Consonants are the other 21 letters, so Y is treated as a consonant.

Can I generate letters with no repeats?

Yes. Turn on "No repeats". You can then draw at most 26 letters from the full alphabet, 5 from the vowels or 21 from the consonants.

Does it include accented or non-English letters?

No. It uses the 26 basic Latin letters A to Z only.

Can I use random letters as a password?

No. Use a password generator that is designed for strong passwords with a larger character set and length controls.

Checked

MDN describes crypto.getRandomValues() as returning cryptographically strong random values; the letter pools are fixed lists (A-Z, AEIOU, and the 21 remaining letters). Pool membership, case options and the no-repeat limit are unit-tested. Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you enter or generate is sent anywhere or stored.

Scope

A general-purpose random tool for games, classrooms, sampling and everyday choices. It is not an audited lottery draw. For regulated contests, gaming or legal selections, follow the rules that apply to you.
