Worked example: €50,000 single

  1. Income tax: 20% of the first €44,000 is €8,800 and 40% of the remaining €6,000 is €2,400, so €11,200 before credits.
  2. Credits: €2,000 personal plus €2,000 Employee Tax Credit leaves €7,200 of income tax.
  3. USC: €1,032.82 (0.5% of €12,012, 2% of the next €16,688 and 3% of the rest, the same figure as Revenue’s own €50,000 example).
  4. PRSI at 4.35%: €2,175.00.
  5. Take-home: €39,592.18 a year, or €3,299.35 a month. At €70,000 it is €50,122.18.

Frequently asked questions

How much tax do I pay on €50,000 in Ireland?

A single person on €50,000 pays about €7,200.00 income tax, €1,032.82 USC and €2,175.00 PRSI at the 4.35% rate in force from 1 October 2026, leaving about €39,592.18 a year.

Did PRSI change in 2026?

Yes. Employee Class A PRSI is 4.2% until 30 September 2026 and 4.35% from 1 October 2026, according to the Department of Social Protection. Use the rate basis menu to see either rate or a blended full year.

At what income does USC start?

USC is not charged if your total income is €13,000 or less in 2026. Above that, USC applies to your full income.

Do pension contributions reduce USC or PRSI?

No. Revenue says there is no relief from USC for employee pension contributions, and PRSI is also charged on the gross amount. The calculator reduces taxable income for income tax only.
