What does a dryer load cost to run?

Cost per load and per hour for an electric dryer (nameplate watts) or a gas dryer (Btu per hour), with weekly, monthly and yearly totals.

Inputs

Starting values are illustrative, not current prices or specifications. Replace each with your own.

Find it on the rating plate, or multiply amps by 240 V. DOE says the plate shows the maximum power drawn.
From the rating plate or manual.
A gas dryer still turns the drum on electricity. Use 0 if unknown.
100 gives an upper bound. Heating elements and burners cycle, so a plug-in meter reading gives a closer figure.

Answer

An electric dryer costs nameplate watts × hours ÷ 1,000 × your price per kWh for each load. A 5,000 W dryer heating for a full hour at $0.15 per kWh uses 5.00 kWh and costs $0.75, or $0.75 an hour. A gas dryer costs Btu per hour × hours ÷ 100,000 × your price per therm, plus a little electricity for the drum motor.

Worked example

Electric: 5,000 W × 1 hour ÷ 1,000 = 5.00 kWh, × $0.15 = $0.75 per load. At 5 loads a week that is $3.75 a week and $195.00 a year. Gas: 22,000 Btu per hour × 1 hour = 22,000 Btu = 0.22 therm, × $1.20 = $0.26, plus 300 W × 1 hour = 0.30 kWh × $0.15 = $0.04, so $0.31 per load and $80.34 a year at 5 loads a week.

FAQ

How do I calculate what my dryer costs per load?

Multiply the dryer's watts by the hours a load runs, divide by 1,000 to get kWh, then multiply by your price per kWh. For a gas dryer, use the burner's Btu per hour instead and divide by 100,000 to get therms.

How much does a dryer cost per hour?

At the example 5,000 W, full-power heating and $0.15 per kWh, it is $0.75 an hour. Your figure scales directly with your watts and your rate.

Why might my real cost be lower than the result?

The nameplate shows maximum power. The heating element cycles on and off, so the average draw is lower. Set the heating share below 100 or measure with a meter.

Where do I find my dryer's watts or Btu?

Check the rating plate inside the door or on the back, or the manual. If only amps are listed, multiply by 240 V for an electric dryer.

Does this include the washer?

No. Use the laundry cost per load calculator to add washer energy, water and detergent.
