Manitoba overtime rules
- Weekly threshold: overtime starts after 40 hours in a week.
- Daily threshold: overtime also starts after 8 hours in a day.
- Overtime rate: 1.5× the regular rate.
Standard hours in Manitoba are 8 in a day and 40 in a week, and either can trigger overtime independently — Manitoba’s own example shows a 38-hour week producing two hours of overtime because one day ran to ten. General holidays are deemed hours worked when calculating overtime; vacation leave and paid sick time are not. Overtime can be banked by written agreement at 1.5 hours per overtime hour, but must be taken within three months or paid out. Different standard hours apply in construction (residential 8/40, industrial-commercial-institutional 10/40, heavy construction 48–50 a week) and in landscaping from 15 April to 30 November (10 a day, 50 a week).
Who is exempt
Employees who primarily perform management functions; employees who substantially control their own hours of work and earn twice the Manitoba Average Industrial Wage; and officials, enumerators and temporary appointees under The Elections Act. Companies with an Averaging Permit or employees with an Individual Flextime Agreement are on different thresholds.

Banked time must be provided within three months of being earned unless Employment Standards authorises longer; if it is not taken in time, all banked hours must be paid out.
