What is in the Ontario Trillium Benefit

The Ontario Trillium Benefit (OTB) combines three credits into one payment: the Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit (OEPTC), the Northern Ontario Energy Credit (NOEC) and the Ontario Sales Tax Credit (OSTC). You claim them by filing your tax return and completing Form ON-BEN. Payments start July 10, 2026 and are usually monthly; if your total is $500 or less it is paid in one payment, and if you chose to wait, a lump sum is issued June 10, 2027.

How each credit is worked out

OEPTC. Occupancy cost is 20% of rent plus property tax. The energy component is capped at $290. The property tax component is 10% of occupancy cost (capped at $944, or $581 for seniors) plus a fixed $73 ($617 for seniors), never more than the occupancy cost. The credit is then reduced by 2% of AFNI over your threshold.

NOEC. Up to $189 for a single person, $290 for couples and single parents, reduced by 1% of AFNI over $50,833 (single) or $65,356 (family).

OSTC. $378 for you, $378 for a spouse or partner and $378 per dependent child, reduced by 4% of AFNI over $29,047 (single, no children) or $36,309 (couples and parents). The seniors' threshold of $37,273 applies to a senior with a spouse or dependant.
