What these numbers are
A North American number is written NPA-NXX-XXXX: area code, exchange, line number. This tool picks a real Canadian area code, fixes the exchange at 555, and picks a line number between 0100 and 0199. NANPA, which administers the numbering plan, states that 555-0100 through 555-0199 remain reserved as fictitious, non-working numbers for entertainment and advertising. That is why films, mockups and documentation can use them without ringing a stranger.
Worked example
Pick Ontario and the format +1 (416) 555-0123. 416 is a Toronto-area code in the Ontario list, 555 is the exchange, and 0123 falls inside 0100 to 0199, so +1 (416) 555-0123 is a fictional number. Changing the last four digits to 0234 would leave the reserved block, so this tool never produces it.
Rules used
- Exchange: always 555.
- Line number: always 0100 to 0199, 100 possible values per area code.
- Area code: one of the 55 Canadian geographic codes, grouped by province or territory. Toll-free, premium and the unconfirmed code 273 are excluded.
- Randomness: crypto.getRandomValues, with rejection sampling so no value is favoured.
Limits
The reservation covers fictitious use in entertainment and advertising. It does not guarantee that no system will ever route such a number, so never use one to contact someone. Other 555 numbers are not safe: NANPA reports they have been returned to its inventory. Area codes are added over time, so check NANPA or the Canadian Numbering Administrator for the current list. Province shown is where the code is used.

Frequently asked questions
Are these real phone numbers?
No. The exchange is always 555 and the line number is always 0100 to 0199, a block the North American Numbering Plan Administrator says is reserved for fictitious use in entertainment and advertising. They are not meant to ring anyone.
Why only 555-0100 to 555-0199?
Because NANPA states that these 100 numbers remain reserved as fictitious, non-working numbers. Other 555 numbers have been returned to NANPA's inventory and could be assigned, and a random seven-digit number can belong to a real person.
Is the area code real?
Yes. Area codes come from the table of Canadian codes used by our Canadian phone number validator. The area code is real, but the full number is fictional. Area codes are added over time, so check NANPA or the Canadian Numbering Administrator for the current list.
Can I use these numbers in a film, app mockup or test database?
That is what the reserved block is for. Note that the reservation is described for entertainment and advertising, and it is not a guarantee that no system will ever treat the number as live. Never use a generated number to contact anyone.
Does a generated number pass the Canadian phone number validator?
It passes the format check, since it is ten digits with a Canadian area code. Passing a format check does not mean a number was issued. Here it simply shows the number is well-formed.
Does this tool store or send anything?
No. Numbers are generated in your browser with the Web Crypto random source and nothing is transmitted.
