SIN number generator: Luhn-valid test SINs.

Make checksum-valid nine-digit numbers for form validation, QA fixtures and demos. Each one starts with 0, which keeps it out of the temporary 9-series and away from the leading digits that real SINs are issued under.

Short answer: a SIN’s ninth digit is a check digit, so a test SIN is eight chosen digits plus the digit that makes the Luhn total a multiple of 10. These numbers are test data only. Never use one as a real SIN or to identify yourself.

How a test SIN is built

Eight digits are chosen, then a ninth check digit is calculated so the whole number passes the Luhn check (the mod-10 check used on payment cards, defined in ISO/IEC 7812-1 (Luhn check digit)). Service Canada does not publish the SIN checksum itself, so this is the widely used scheme that SIN validators and form libraries apply, not an official specification. Walk through the arithmetic in how to validate a SIN number.

Why these numbers start with 0

A random nine-digit number that passes the checksum could be a number that really was issued to someone. To avoid ever handing out a stranger’s SIN, this tool only generates numbers beginning with 0. The Service Canada pages we reviewed describe a leading 9 for temporary residents and say nothing about a leading 0, so we cannot promise a 0-series number has never been assigned anywhere, only that it is not in the series Service Canada describes. Treat every output as fictional test data.

If the system under test rejects a leading 0, use the sample values in its own documentation, or the fixed public example 046 454 286 that the SIN validator uses. We do not offer numbers with other leading digits on purpose.

What test SINs are good for

What they are not for

Service Canada states that a SIN is private and that it is illegal for anyone else to use it. A generated number is not a SIN, cannot be verified by Service Canada, and must never be given to an employer, bank or government form as if it were real.

Frequently asked questions

Is this SIN generator safe to use?

Yes for test data. Every number starts with 0 and is generated in your browser, so none comes from a database of real SINs. Do not use a generated number as an identity document or on any real application.

Will a generated SIN pass a SIN validator?

It will pass any validator that checks nine digits and the Luhn checksum, including our SIN validator. A validator that also rejects a leading 0 will flag it as an unrecognized series, which is intended.

Why not generate numbers with other leading digits?

Real SINs are issued under other leading digits, so a random checksum-valid number there could match an actual person. Leaving them out is a deliberate privacy choice.

Can I use a generated SIN to get a job or open an account?

No. A generated SIN is fictional and was never issued. Using another person’s SIN is illegal per Service Canada.

Does a valid checksum mean a SIN exists?

No. The checksum only shows the digits are internally consistent. Only Service Canada can confirm that a SIN was issued.
