Answer and steps

Enter a dividend and a divisor.

How long division works

Long division splits a big division into small ones. It repeats four steps until there are no digits left to bring down: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down. The number being divided is the dividend, the number you divide by is the divisor and the answer is the quotient.

Worked example. 4,217 ÷ 25. Take the first two digits, 42: 42 ÷ 25 = 1, and 42 − 25 = 17. Bring down the 1 to make 171: 171 ÷ 25 = 6, and 171 − 150 = 21. Bring down the 7 to make 217: 217 ÷ 25 = 8, and 217 − 200 = 17. The quotient is 168 with remainder 17, and 168 × 25 + 17 = 4,217. Keep going with two decimal places and the answer is 168.68.

An exact one. 425 ÷ 25 gives a quotient of 17 and a remainder of 0, so it divides exactly.

Frequently asked questions

How do you do long division with a remainder?

Divide, multiply, subtract and bring down the next digit, repeating until no digits are left. Whatever is left at the end is the remainder. For 4217 ÷ 25 that is 168 remainder 17.

How do I check a long division answer?

Multiply the quotient by the divisor and add the remainder. You should get the dividend back: 168 × 25 + 17 = 4217.

Can I get a decimal instead of a remainder?

Yes. Add a decimal point and a zero to the remainder and keep dividing. 100 ÷ 8 is 12 remainder 4, and with decimals it is 12.5. Choose the decimal places above to see those steps.

What are the dividend, divisor and quotient?

The dividend is the number being divided, the divisor is the number you divide by, and the quotient is the answer.

What if the divisor is bigger than the dividend?

The divisor goes in 0 times and the dividend is the remainder. For 7 ÷ 12 the quotient is 0 with remainder 7, or 0.5833... as a decimal.
