How the timer works
The ADA recommends brushing teeth for two minutes twice a day with a soft-bristled brush and a fluoride toothpaste. Brushing for two minutes has been shown to achieve clinically significant plaque removal, according to the ADA. This timer counts down 120 seconds and splits it into four equal sections of 30 seconds: upper left, upper right, lower right, lower left. Splitting the time this way is a common habit, not an ADA requirement, so use any order that covers every tooth surface. A manual or powered brush can be used, and the ADA says to replace it every three to four months.
Worked example. Press Start at 2:00. At 1:30 the section changes from upper left to upper right; at 1:00 to lower right; at 0:30 to lower left; at 0:00 the timer finishes. Do this morning and night for two sessions a day, 4 minutes in total.
The beep uses your browser's own audio and is off if you set it to Off. If your device is muted you will only see the countdown.

FAQ
How long should you brush your teeth?
The ADA recommends two minutes, twice a day, with a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste.
Why four sections?
Dividing the mouth into four parts is a common way to remember to cover every area. It is not an ADA rule, so any thorough pattern works.
Do I need to floss as well?
The ADA recommends flossing once a day, because a toothbrush cannot fully clean the spaces between your teeth.
Does this work with an electric toothbrush?
Yes. The ADA says manual and powered toothbrushes can both be used effectively, and many powered brushes have their own two-minute timer.
Will the timer keep running if I switch tabs?
Browsers can slow a background tab, but the timer counts from the clock, so the time shown stays right when you return.
