How the payment is worked out
Amount financed = total price - insurance - down payment. At 0% interest the payment is the amount financed divided by the number of months. With interest it is a standard loan payment: financed × r ÷ (1 - (1 + r)-months), where r is the APR divided by 12. Interest is the payments added up minus the amount financed.
Worked example. A $6,000 treatment with $1,500 from insurance and $1,000 down leaves $3,500.00 to finance. Over 24 months at 0% that is $145.83 a month, with no interest, and you pay $4,500.00 yourself. At 8% APR the same loan is $158.30 a month, with $299.09 of interest, and you pay $4,799.09 yourself.
The ADA says most people are in orthodontic treatment for one to three years, followed by a period wearing a retainer, so a plan much longer than your expected treatment time deserves a question. Removable aligners are one option and are used under the supervision of a dentist or orthodontist. Ask the office whether retainers, refinements and missed-appointment fees are in the quoted price, because this tool only knows what you enter.
