How this VO2 max estimate works
This calculator uses the Heart Rate Ratio Method, a non-exercise VO2max estimation formula published by Uth, Sørensen, Overgaard & Pedersen (2004) in the European Journal of Applied Physiology. It needs only two numbers — your resting heart rate and your maximum heart rate — and skips the treadmill or cycle-ergometer test that direct VO2max testing requires.
Formula
- VO2max (ml/kg/min) = 15.3 × (HRmax ÷ HRrest)
HRmax is your true maximum heart rate in beats per minute; HRrest is your resting heart rate, ideally measured on waking before any movement or caffeine.
Accuracy and limits
- The original validation constant (15.3) was derived from healthy, trained men and correlates strongly (r ≈ 0.90) with directly measured VO2max in that population.
- A 2020 follow-up analysis (Voutilainen et al.) found the constant runs lower for older, untrained, or heavier individuals — so treat this as a fitness estimate, not a clinical measurement.
- Accuracy depends entirely on how correctly HRmax and HRrest are measured — an age-based HRmax guess will carry that guess's error into the result.
