Worked example
A person recorded as aged 30 in the England and Wales census of 30 March 1851 was born between 31 March 1820 and 30 March 1821. Birth dates from 31 March to 31 December 1820 give a birth year of 1820, and 1 January to 30 March 1821 give 1821, so the year is 1820 or 1821. For 1841, a recorded age of 40 means 40 to 44 because adult ages were rounded down to the nearest five, so the window runs from 7 June 1796 to 6 June 1801.
How it works
A census records the age on census day. Someone aged A has had A birthdays and not yet had their A+1st, so they were born after the date A+1 years before census day and on or before the date A years before it. That makes a one-year window, which usually spans two calendar years. The tool assumes the age written is the age on census day; if it was given on a later visit, the window shifts a little.
The 1841 census of England and Wales is different: ages of 15 and over were rounded down to the nearest five years, so an age that is a multiple of five stands for that age up to four years more. The tool applies this automatically for 1841 ages of 15 or more that are multiples of five and shows a note when it does. Census days are listed in the dropdown; for any other census choose Other and enter its date.

FAQ
How do I work out a birth year from a census age?
Subtract the age from the census year. Because the census falls part-way through the year, the answer is one of two years: the census year minus the age if the birthday had already passed, or one year earlier if not.
What date was the 1851 census?
The England and Wales census was taken on 30 March 1851, according to The National Archives. Other England and Wales dates: 1841 6 June, 1861 7 April, 1871 2 April, 1881 3 April, 1891 5 April, 1901 31 March, 1911 2 April, 1921 19 June.
Why was the 1921 census on 19 June?
The intended date was 24 April 1921, but it was postponed because of industrial unrest, which would have made it impossible to collect accurate information in some areas.
Were ages rounded in the 1841 census?
Yes. Ages of 15 and over were rounded down to the nearest five years, so a recorded age of 40 can mean anyone from 40 to 44.
What day was the 1940 US census?
April 1, 1940. The 1930 and 1950 US censuses were also taken on April 1, the 1920 census on January 1 and the 1910 census on April 15.
What if my census is not in the list?
Choose Other in the Census menu and enter the census day. The tool will work out the birth window from that date.
