Understanding BMR
Basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body burns at complete rest just to keep essential functions running — breathing, circulation, and cell repair. It does not include any activity.
Formula (Mifflin-St Jeor, 1990)
- Men: BMR = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age (years) + 5
- Women: BMR = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age (years) − 161
The Mifflin-St Jeor equation is the formula most widely recommended by dietitians today, replacing the older Harris-Benedict equation. It's typically accurate within about 10% of measured resting energy expenditure.
From BMR to daily calories
Your BMR is only the resting baseline. Multiply it by an activity factor to estimate total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) — the maintenance-calories table above does this across five common activity levels.
