Overtime pay = 1.5 x the regular rate for each hour over 40 in a workweek. At $18 an hour for 46 hours: 46 x $18 = $828 straight time plus 6 x $9 = $54 premium, or $882 for the week.

The federal rule
The US Department of Labor states that, unless specifically exempted, employees covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act must receive overtime pay for hours worked over 40 in a workweek at a rate not less than time and one-half their regular rates of pay. The Act does not require overtime pay for Saturdays, Sundays, holidays or regular days of rest as such. A workweek is a fixed, recurring period of 168 hours (seven consecutive 24-hour periods), and hours cannot be averaged across weeks.
The regular rate is total pay for the week, excluding statutory exclusions, divided by the total hours actually worked (29 CFR 778.109). When an employee does two kinds of work at different rates, the regular rate is the weighted average of those rates, which is what the second-rate fields compute. The regular rate includes all pay except the statutory exclusions, which include discretionary bonuses, so a bonus that is not purely discretionary raises the premium.
Salary for more than 40 hours
The DOL gives this example: an employee hired for a 45-hour week at a weekly salary of $405 has a regular rate of $9.00 ($405 / 45). The 5 overtime hours earn an extra half-rate of $4.50 x 5 = $22.50. Choose the salary basis, enter $405 and 45 hours to reproduce it: total pay is $427.50.
Limits of this page
This page applies the federal FLSA rule only. Your state may set its own overtime rules, and employees who are exempt from overtime are outside it. Check your state labor office via the DOL State Labor Laws page below. It does not cover double time, daily overtime or exclusions such as discretionary bonuses; enter only pay that belongs in the regular rate. This is not legal advice. For Canada see overtime pay by province.

FAQ
How is overtime calculated under the FLSA?
For hours over 40 in a workweek the employer owes at least one and one-half times the regular rate. The regular rate is total straight-time pay divided by total hours worked.
Do bonuses count toward overtime?
The regular rate includes all pay except the exclusions in the Act, and discretionary bonuses are one of those exclusions. Enter a bonus that is not purely discretionary in the bonus field and it raises the premium. Leave discretionary bonuses out.
Is daily overtime or double time covered?
No. This page applies the federal weekly rule. Some states add daily overtime or double time, so check your state labor office.
How do you calculate overtime for a salaried employee?
Divide the weekly salary by the hours it is meant to cover to get the regular rate, then add half that rate for each hour over 40. The DOL example of $405 for 45 hours gives $427.50.
