HR and people ops

Job offer comparison calculator.

Enter two offers side by side. See total yearly value, value after commuting costs and value per paid working hour.

Total yearly value = salary + bonus + match + equity + benefits + signing bonus spread over the years you plan to stay. A $90,000 offer with extras totals $108,600; a $100,000 offer totals $122,000. After a $3,000 commute, B is ahead by $16,400.

How the comparison works

Each offer's total yearly value is base salary plus target bonus, retirement match as a share of salary, the yearly value of equity, employer-paid benefits and the signing bonus divided by the years you plan to stay. Commuting costs are then subtracted to show what is left.

Value per paid working hour divides that figure by the hours in a 52-week year minus vacation and holiday hours, using hours per week divided by five as the length of a day. More time off raises the hourly figure for the same pay.

What to treat carefully

Bonus, equity and benefit values are the figures you enter, and a target bonus is not guaranteed. Equity can be worth far less or more than its grant value; enter a cautious yearly number. Figures are before tax, and tax differs by state or province. After tax, take-home is a separate calculation: see the paycheck calculator for Canada or the hourly to salary converter.

Worked example

Total yearly value = salary + bonus + match + equity + benefits + signing bonus spread over the years you plan to stay. A $90,000 offer with extras totals $108,600; a $100,000 offer totals $122,000. After a $3,000 commute, B is ahead by $16,400.

FAQ

How do you compare two job offers?

Convert each to a total yearly value that includes bonus, match, equity, benefits and signing bonus, subtract extra costs such as commuting, and compare per hour worked.

How is the signing bonus counted?

It is spread evenly over the years you expect to stay, so a $10,000 bonus over 2 years adds $5,000 a year.

Why compare value per working hour?

Two offers with the same total can have different vacation, holidays and weekly hours. The hourly figure shows the difference.

Is the result after tax?

No. It is pre-tax, so use a paycheck calculator to compare take-home pay.
