Wardrobe Calculators
Dry cleaning vs home.
Divide each method's cost per clean by the wears between cleans. A $12 dry clean every 4 wears is $3.00 a wear; a $1.50 load shared by 10 garments, washed every 3 wears, is $0.05 a wear. Over 60 wears a year that is a $177 difference. This compares cost only: check the care label before you wash anything. Runs in your browser.

Worked example
A dry clean costs $12 and you clean the garment every 4 wears: 12 / 4 = $3.00 a wear. At home a load costs $1.50 and holds 10 garments, so washing one costs 1.50 / 10 = $0.15; every 3 wears that is $0.05 a wear. At 60 wears a year, dry cleaning costs $180 and home washing $3, a difference of $177 a year. If you value your time at $18 an hour, 20 minutes of trips adds $6.00 to each dry clean (a $18 clean, $4.50 a wear) and 10 minutes of home care adds $3.00 to each wash ($3.15, $1.05 a wear), so home is still cheaper.
How it works
dry clean cost per wear = (price + trip minutes / 60 x hourly value) / wears between cleans. home cost per wear = (load cost / garments in the load + care minutes / 60 x hourly value) / wears between washes. Yearly cost multiplies by wears per year.
This does not tell you a garment can be washed. Under the US Care Labeling Rule, a manufacturer must give complete instructions for regular care or a warning if the garment cannot be cleaned without harm. A label may give more than one method; a label that adds "For best results, dryclean" tells you the garment can be washed without damage, though dry cleaning may be better for its appearance and durability. A "dry clean only" label means follow it. See our Laundry Care Symbol Decoder.
The costs you enter are yours; no dry cleaning prices are assumed. Ruining a garment by washing it wrongly is not in the arithmetic.

FAQ
Is dry cleaning more expensive than washing at home?
Usually per clean, yes, but the answer depends on your price and how often you clean. Divide each method's cost by the wears between cleans. In the worked example dry cleaning is $3.00 a wear against $0.05 at home.
Can I wash a dry clean only garment at home?
Check the care label, not a calculator. The label should give complete instructions or warn if the garment cannot be cleaned without harm. If it says dry clean only, follow it.
What does "For best results, dryclean" mean?
According to the US Federal Trade Commission, it tells consumers the garment can be washed without damage, but drycleaning may be better for appearance and durability.
Should I count my time?
If you want to. Enter an hourly value and the minutes each method takes. Leave the hourly value at 0 to compare money only.
How do I reduce dry cleaning cost per wear?
Wear the garment more times between cleans, if it stays fresh, or spread the cost over more wears per year. The break-even dry clean price in the results shows what a clean would have to cost to match washing at home.
What this calculates, and what it does not
Cost comparison only. It does not say a garment is safe to wash; follow the care label, and test or ask a cleaner if unsure.
