Chord transposer and capo.

Paste your chords, choose the key they are in and the key you want. Every chord, including slash bass notes, moves by the same number of semitones. A capo table shows which shapes to play for each fret. Runs in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere.

Worked example

G D Em C in G, moved to A: A is 2 semitones above G, so every chord goes up 2 semitones: A E F#m D. Moved to Bb the shortest way is up 3 semitones: Bb F Gm Eb. Played with a capo on fret 2, the shapes for the A chart are G D Em C, the originals.

How it works

Transposing by n semitones adds n to the pitch class of every note, modulo 12: Tn(x) = x + n (mod 12). The shift is the distance from the original key to the new key. Slash chords like D/F# move both the chord and the bass note. A capo on fret n raises each open string n semitones, so with a capo on fret n you play shapes that are n semitones below the sounding chords; the table lists those shapes for frets 0 to 7.

Enharmonic spelling (C# versus Db) does not change the sound. The tool only reads chord symbols it recognises, so a lone capital letter in lyrics, such as the word "A", will be treated as a chord; use the chords-only box for best results. Major and minor are not detected, only shifted, so the key names are for the shift amount.

FAQ

How do I transpose chords to another key?

Count the semitones from the old key to the new key and move every chord that many semitones. G to A is two semitones, so G becomes A, D becomes E and Em becomes F#m.

How does a capo change the key?

A capo on fret n raises the open strings by n semitones, so the same shapes sound n semitones higher. To sound in A using G shapes, put the capo on fret 2.

Should I use sharps or flats?

They sound the same. Flat keys such as F, Bb and Eb are normally written with flats and keys such as D, A and E with sharps. Choose the spelling you prefer.

Does it work with slash chords and extensions?

Yes. Qualities like m7, maj7, sus4, dim and add9 are kept, and the bass note after a slash is transposed too.

Why was a word in my lyrics changed?

A single capital A to G on its own looks like a chord. Paste only the chord lines, or edit the result.
