DC where's my refund: MyTax, verification notices and the 6-month limit
The Office of Tax and Revenue runs refund status through MyTax.DC.gov and a three-type verification process. This page explains both and a limit most guides miss. It does not look up a refund.
DC's Office of Tax and Revenue says processing of certain returns is estimated to take up to eight weeks, and that fraud-prevention measures can lengthen it. MyTax.DC.gov shows refund status only for returns filed within the last six months; older returns need a call to (202) 727-4TAX.

What MyTax.DC.gov tells you, and the six-month limit
OTR's refund status page says MyTax.DC.gov lets you find out three things: whether your return has been received, whether your final refund amount matches the amount you claimed, and whether your refund has been mailed. You enter your Social Security number, the tax year and your refund amount. Then comes a limit that most third-party guides leave out: refund status is provided only for returns filed within the last six months. For a return filed earlier, you must contact customer service at (202) 727-4TAX (4829), Monday to Friday, 8:15 am to 5:30 pm, TTY 711. OTR's refund FAQ adds that if your return has been processed you may also call that number for the status.
The consequence is practical: a DC filer who files in February and is still waiting in August has aged out of the online tool and must use the phone.
The one number DC publishes
The refund FAQ says OTR's enhanced security measures to safeguard tax dollars and combat identity theft and refund fraud may result in longer processing times for some returns and associated refunds, and that processing of certain tax returns is estimated to take up to eight weeks. Note the phrasing: certain returns. OTR does not publish a headline figure for ordinary e-filed returns on the pages used here, so the calculator reports a window only for returns flagged for extra review, counted from the day you filed, and nothing for others.
Three kinds of verification request
If OTR sends a verification letter, you must respond through MyTax.DC.gov before it can process the return. Its Return Integrity Unit runs the process, and the page lists three types. An Identity Verification PIN notice needs the letter, your last name, the PIN printed on the letter and the refund amount you requested. An Identity Verification Quiz notice needs the notice number from the letter, the last four digits of your Social Security number and the refund amount you requested. An Additional Verification Documents notice asks for supporting documents about income, identity or other items; the letters may carry different names but all need the same response. Because the three look alike on paper, read the letter's heading first and gather the matching items before logging in.
Worked example (hypothetical dates)
You file on February 10, 2026. If your return is one of the certain returns OTR flags for extra review, the eight-week figure ends on April 7, 2026. If the return then sits without a verification letter, you are still inside the six-month status limit, which runs to roughly August 10, 2026 (the calculator counts 182 days and prints August 11). A filer with a verification quiz letter dated March 3 should take the quiz that week; OTR cannot process the return until it is answered, so every day of delay in responding is a day added to the wait.
Common mistakes
- Waiting past six months and then wondering why MyTax shows nothing.
- Calling about a return that has not been processed; OTR says phone status is for returns already processed.
- Mixing up the PIN notice, the quiz notice and the document notice.
- Entering a refund amount from a draft rather than the filed return.
- Answering a verification notice by phone or mail; OTR says to respond through MyTax.DC.gov before it can process the return.
Who this is for and what it leaves out
DC residents and part-year filers waiting on a D-40 refund, especially those holding a verification notice or approaching the six-month mark. It does not read MyTax, store details, or tell you why a return was flagged. Follow the instructions on the notice you actually hold. There is no dedicated DC paycheck calculator on this site; the generic paycheck calculator and the state income tax calculator are linked below. The federal refund is tracked separately with the IRS.

Not tax advice and not an official tracker
This page summarizes published guidance from DC Office of Tax and Revenue as of October 20, 2026 and does arithmetic on dates you type. It cannot see your return, your refund or your status, and it never asks for an SSN or refund amount. Ask a tax professional about your own situation.
