Virginia where's my refund: the delay causes Virginia Tax lists

Virginia Tax gives different figures on different pages, and names a verification-letter step many filers fear. This page reconciles the numbers and explains each cause. It does not look up your refund.

Virginia Tax's Where's my Refund page lists up to 4 weeks for e-filed returns, up to 10 weeks for paper, and an additional 3 weeks for certified mail. A separate e-file FAQ says about 2 weeks. A refund verification letter is an extra step, not a sign of an error.

Why Virginia Tax seems to say two things

Virginia Tax's Where's my Refund page lists general processing times during filing season: electronically filed returns up to 4 weeks, paper returns up to 10 weeks, and returns sent by certified mail an additional 3 weeks. Its separate e-file FAQ says e-filed refunds are typically issued within about 2 weeks while paper refunds can take up to 10 weeks or longer. Those are not contradictory so much as different claims: one is a typical case and the other a ceiling for the general case. The page also says processing times vary with individual factors, and that when processing is finished the tool shows the date the refund was sent.

The practical reading: if you e-filed, two weeks is the usual end of the wait and four weeks is the point where a cause should be sought. The tool and the 24/7 automated phone line, 804.367.2486, are said to carry the same information as customer service representatives.

Verification letters are an extra step, not an accusation

Virginia Tax says it often sends letters asking for documentation to verify information claimed on returns, and that such a letter does not mean you did anything wrong. Its aim is to stop fraudulent returns before they go out, not to slow your refund. Some letters can be answered online, and Virginia Tax says that is the fastest route. The letters it names as eligible carry the codes AUIN073A, AUIN073M, AUIN273A, AUIN373A, AUIN473A and AUIN573A in the bottom left corner. To respond online you need your Social Security number or ITIN, the Correspondence ID from the letter, and the tax year on the letter. By mail or fax, return the letter with your documents to the Virginia Department of Taxation, RAP Unit 1, P.O. Box 27003, Richmond, VA 23261-7003, or fax 804.344.8565.

Its refund fraud prevention advice also includes putting your Virginia driver's license or ID number and its issue date on the return. If you suspect someone filed in your name, it lists an identity theft information line, 804.404.4185.

Why the refund can be reduced or arrive as a check

Virginia Tax withholds all or part of a refund for debts owed to Virginia local governments, courts, other state agencies, the IRS or certain federal agencies, and for unpaid Virginia taxes from earlier years. It sends a letter naming the agency and amount, and says it has no information about the outside debts, so questions go to the agency that made the claim. Any remainder goes by check to the address on your most recent return; it says reduced refunds cannot be issued by direct deposit. The same applies if it adjusts your refund, if your bank details were wrong or the account was closed, or if you gave a routing number for a bank outside the United States.

Wrong bank information can add about two more weeks, depending on how soon the bank tells Virginia Tax. The calculator has a checkbox for it.

Worked example (hypothetical dates)

You e-file on February 10, 2026. Four weeks is March 10, 2026. A return mailed on February 10 reaches the 10-week mark on April 21, and the certified-mail mark on May 12, 2026 (13 weeks in all). If the e-filed refund goes to a closed account, the same March 10 date moves to about March 24. If instead the status tool stopped moving and a letter arrived on March 5, answering it online that week is likelier to help than waiting out the ten weeks.

Common mistakes

Who this is for and what it leaves out

Virginia residents and part-year filers waiting on a Form 760 refund, particularly those who received a verification letter or whose status stopped moving. It does not read Virginia Tax systems, store your details, or tell you why a return was selected. The 2019 “update on return processing” story that still circulates describes a past backlog and should not be used for this season. The federal refund is tracked separately with the IRS.

Not tax advice and not an official tracker

This page summarizes published guidance from Virginia Tax as of October 20, 2026 and does arithmetic on dates you type. It cannot see your return, your refund or your status, and it never asks for an SSN or refund amount. Ask a tax professional about your own situation.
