Worked example
A $500,000 loan at a 75% guaranty with a maturity over 12 months: guaranteed portion = $375,000. The $150,001–$700,000 tier is 3%, so the upfront fee is $375,000 × 3% = $11,250. The lender's first-year service fee is at most 0.55% × $375,000 = $2,062.50, declining as the balance is repaid.
A $2,000,000 loan at 75%: guaranteed = $1,500,000. Fee = $1,000,000 × 3.5% + $500,000 × 3.75% = $35,000 + $18,750 = $53,750.

Working Capital Pilot (WCP) and Export Working Capital (EWCP) loans, loans approved within 90 days of each other (they are combined for the fee), loan increases and extensions of short-term loans. Use SBA's own calculator for those. SBA states that if its worksheet differs from E-Tran, the E-Tran amount prevails.
FAQ
Who pays the SBA 7(a) guaranty fee?
The upfront fee is owed to SBA on the guaranteed portion of the loan and is normally passed to the borrower by the lender. The lender's annual service fee may not be passed on to the borrower.
Is the fee based on the loan amount or the guaranteed amount?
The tier is chosen by the gross loan amount, but the percentage is applied to the guaranteed portion of the loan.
Does the fee change every year?
SBA reviews the fees each fiscal year and announces them in an Information Notice. This page encodes FY 2026 only; loans approved on or after October 1, 2026 fall under the next notice.
What is not calculated here?
WCP and EWCP loans, loans approved within 90 days of each other, increases and short-term extensions. SBA's own calculator and E-Tran control the final figure.
