How the overall band is rounded
The IELTS Test Report Form shows a band score for each of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, plus an overall band. Per IELTS, the overall band is the average of the four section scores rounded to the nearest half band. The two special cases are the ones people get wrong: an average ending in .25 is rounded up to the next half band, and an average ending in .75 is rounded up to the next whole band.
IELTS's own worked examples: 6.5, 6.5, 5.0, 7.0 average 6.25 and give an overall 6.5; 4.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.0 average 3.875 and give 4.0; 6.5, 6.5, 5.5, 6.0 average 6.125 and give 6.0. All three are reproduced by this calculator.
Need Canadian Language Benchmark levels? Immigration programs score each skill separately rather than using the overall band, so use the CLB Score Converter for that.

Frequently asked questions
How is the IELTS overall band score calculated?
Add the four section band scores, divide by four, then round to the nearest half band. An average ending in .25 goes up to the next half band and one ending in .75 goes up to the next whole band.
Does a 6.75 average round to 7.0?
Yes. An average ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band, so 6.75 becomes 7.0.
Does 6.125 round to 6.0 or 6.5?
To 6.0. It is closer to 6.0 than to 6.5, and it does not end in .25, so the round-up rule does not apply. IELTS lists this exact case as an example.
Estimate only
This tool applies the IELTS overall band rounding rule to the four section scores you enter. Your official overall band is the one on your IELTS Test Report Form, issued by the test centre. Immigration and university requirements may be set per skill as well as overall; check the requirement of the organisation you are applying to.
