Short answer

A 1-inch filter in a home with 1 or 2 pets and 4 or more people lasts about 60 days: inside the 30 to 90 day range and on the shorter side. Changed on 1 October 2026, the next change is 30 November 2026. ENERGY STAR says to check the filter once a month and change it if it is dirty.

How it works, with a worked example

ENERGY STAR says to check a furnace filter once a month and to clean it (if reusable) or replace it if it is dirty. A filter supplier, Atomic Filters, gives typical life by thickness: 1-inch every 30 to 90 days depending on usage, pets and allergies; 2-inch every 2 to 3 months; 4-inch and thicker every 3 to 6 months.

How the tool picks a day count. It starts at the long end of the range and moves toward the short end as the load goes up. One point each for: 1 or 2 pets (two points for 3 or more), 4 or more people, allergies in the household, and a dusty home. Four or more points gives the short end. That scoring is our rule of thumb, not a published standard. Worked example: a 1-inch filter, 1 or 2 pets (1 point) and 4 people (1 point) scores 2 of 4: 90 - (90 - 30) x 2/4 = 60 days. From 1 October 2026, 60 days is 30 November 2026.

When in doubt, follow the interval printed on the filter you bought and the monthly check ENERGY STAR describes.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I change my furnace filter?

Check it monthly. ENERGY STAR says to replace it when it is dirty. A 1-inch filter commonly lasts 30 to 90 days depending on pets, people and allergies.

How often should I change a 4-inch filter?

Atomic Filters gives every 3 to 6 months for 4-inch and thicker filters. Check it monthly and follow the maker's label.

Do pets shorten filter life?

Yes. Pet hair and dander load a filter faster, so homes with pets sit toward the short end of the range.

Does a dirty filter cost money?

ENERGY STAR says a dirty filter slows air flow, making the system work harder, which wastes energy.

Not professional advice

Follow the maker's instructions for your filter and furnace. Turn the system off before changing the filter. This is general guidance, not an HVAC inspection.
