How many grams are in a cup?
It depends on the ingredient. One US cup of all-purpose flour is 120 g, a cup of granulated sugar is 198 g, a cup of packed brown sugar is 213 g and a cup of water or milk is 227 g. Weighing is more repeatable than scooping, because a scooped cup of flour can vary by 20 g or more.
Worked example. A recipe calls for 2 cups of all-purpose flour. 2 x 120 g = 240 g. Going the other way, 300 g of flour is 300 / 120 = 2.5 cups, or 40 tablespoons.
Butter is listed by the chart as 113 g for 8 tablespoons (half a cup, one US stick is 113 g), so a full cup is 226 g here. Teaspoon and tablespoon weights are scaled from the chart's measure using 3 teaspoons per tablespoon and 16 tablespoons per cup.
Frequently asked questions
How many grams is 1 cup of flour?
One US cup of all-purpose, bread or cake flour is 120 g on the King Arthur chart. Whole wheat flour is 113 g, oat flour 92 g and cornmeal 138 g.
How many grams is a cup of sugar?
Granulated sugar is 198 g per cup, packed brown sugar 213 g and icing sugar (confectioners') 113 g.
Is a Canadian or UK cup different?
This tool uses the US customary cup of 236.6 mL. A Canadian metric cup is 250 mL and an imperial cup is about 284 mL, so weights for those cups are about 6% higher or 20% higher. When a recipe gives grams, use the grams.
Why do bakers weigh instead of using cups?
Flour packs differently each time you scoop it. Grams give the same dough every time.

Scope
Weights are for the specific US cup and ingredient on the chart. Brand, humidity and how you pack an ingredient change the real figure. When a recipe gives grams, trust the grams.
